Q: Where does GPS data come from?
A: Vehicles or Assets Tracking data is generated by GPS-enabled communication hardware. GSM/GPRS modems are the most common and practical devices for this purpose. A two-radio with GPS option makes sense for radio-dispatched fleets. A GPS modem or a two-way radio transmits GPS data at preset intervals. This data is either re-routed over the Internet, or received by the base radio, and passed to the Tracking Application that will plot vehicles or assets positions onto the map. Depending on the communication system and hardware, data could be passed in both directions - modem (radio) to client and client to modem (radio). For example, in case of bi-directional communications the client could query the position of the vehicle, instead of waiting for the next scheduled transmission.

Q: What is the difference between tracking vehicles and tracking assets?
A: Quite subtle. When tracking vehicles the user expects getting some additional information like ignition state (on/off), head lights or emergency lights on/off, odometer reading, etc. This information is sent along with GPS data.
